At an event today at the Daimler Truck factory in Mt. Holly, N.C., President Obama launched EV-Everywhere, the second in a series of Energy Department “Clean Energy Grand Challenges” aimed at addressing the most pressing energy challenges of our time. The EV Everywhere Challenge will bring together America’s best and brightest scientists, engineers, and businesses to work collaboratively to make electric vehicles more affordable and convenient to own and drive than today’s gasoline-powered vehicles within the next 10 years.
He may have owned a Chrysler 300 and a Jeep Grand Cherokee, but President Obama said Tuesday that he would be a Chevy guy when he leaves office.
At a conference in Washington, Mr. Obama told representatives of the United Automobile Workers that he would buy a Chevrolet Volt in five years, after fulfilling a potential second term as president.
The budget introduced Monday by President Obama for the 2013 fiscal year included a provision (PDF) of particular interest to sellers and potential buyers of alternative-powertrain vehicles.
If the provision were preserved, it would increase the current maximum federal income tax credit for certain plug-in vehicles from $7,500 to as much as $10,000. The credit would no longer be claimed by the consumer, but by the vehicle’s seller or financer, who could opt to give buyers a break at the time of sale by reducing the list price.
Being the president of the United States doesn’t mean you can get anything you want. It may be possible to get an ice cream sundae from the White House kitchen after midnight, but a hybrid presidential limousine? No can do.
That’s how President Obama describes it, anyway. At a town hall event in Charlotte, N.C., last week, he said his undoubtedly polite request was rebuffed by security officials. “I asked can we make these cars hybrids,” Mr. Obama said, as quoted by ABC News. “Secret Service said no. Now, the reason is not because Secret Service are bad guys. It’s because the cars that I’m in are like tanks.”
