Volkswagen Prices 256-Horsepower Golf R at $34,760

Nearly a year after confirming that the Golf R, Volkwagen’s hottest hatch, would come to America, pricing has been announced for the all-wheel-driven model.

Arriving in American showrooms in January, the R will carry prices ranging from $34,760 to $36,860. The brand is offering the R in two- and four-door form, but there is no choice in transmissions: a six-speed manual is it.

Traction-Control Override a Possibility for 2012 VW GTI and Golf R

The sportiest Volkswagen models available in Europe for 2012 — the GTI, the Golf R and the Scirocco — will come standard with a new electronic stability system that can be fully disabled.

According to Corey Proffitt, a Volkswagen North America spokesman, VW is considering offering a similar setup for the 2012 GTI for sale in the United States, which arrives this summer, and the 2013 Golf R, due late this year or early in 2012.
