BMW India began the year with a bang when it launched the high performance M5 sedan at the 2012 Indian Auto Expo. After following it up with the big volume product in the form of the F30 2012 3 Series sedan which was launched a few weeks back, the German luxury marque has two more key launches lined up for India in the coming months. While one such launch is the facelifted 2012 X1 crossover, the other launch is the facelifted 2013 7 Series luxury saloon. This car, which was web released a while ago will make its worldwide debut at the 2012 Paris Motor Show.
The 2013 BMW 7 Series luxury saloon is quite an important model for the German luxury car maker as competitor and compatriot Mercedes Benz will launch the all new 2013 S-Class saloon very soon. The S-Class, which promises to take luxury, safety and performance to an all new level means that cars like the BMW 7 Series and the Audi A8 need to step up their game. The launch of the facelifted 7 Series luxury saloon is one such move from BMW, and the car comes with a host of changes, which represent evolutionary rather than revolutionary ones.
For starters, the car’s front end gets a new grille, a new bumpers and the LED treatment for its headlamps. Under the hood, the petrol and diesel engines get more powerful as well as fuel efficient. All wheel drive is standard on the top of the line engine options in the European market while the rest of the world has to make do with the rear wheel drive option. An 8 speed automatic gearbox is standard on the 2013 7 Series range. Also, the car gets air suspension at the rear as standard to improve ride comfort by a large margin. Also, the interiors see better sound insulation for a quieter cabin that ensconces its occupants in absolute luxury.
The 2012 7 Series saloon is imported into India through the CBU route and with the newer model, BMW India would do well to assemble this car locally through CKD kits. This, as the top selling luxury saloon in India, the Mercedes Benz S-Class, comes in semi knocked down guise and is assembled at Chakan, off Pune. So, assembling the 2013 BMW 7 Series in India would allow the car to be priced more competitively.
