Volkswagen’s little Up city car has won the 2012 World Car of the Year competition.
It was chosen from a field of 34 newly launched vehicles from around the world, which was eventually narrowed down to just three cars – the Up ultimately having to fend off the BMW 3 Series and Porsche 911.

In a ceremony Monday that opened the 82nd Geneva auto show, the Chevrolet Volt and Opel Ampera, the European version of the Volt, were jointly named the European Car of the Year.
The plug-in hybrids beat out a field that included the Toyota Yaris, Volkswagen Up, Citroën DS5, Ford Focus, Land Rover Evoque and Fiat Panda. The award was voted on by members of Europe’s motoring press.
