The curtains came up Tuesday on the three Scion Tuner Challenge cars ahead of their Specialty Equipment Market Association (SEMA) Show debut in Las Vegas Nov. 5-8. The stars: three custom car builders representing tuner scenes in the East, the Pacific Northwest and Southern California. At the beginning of the competition, Scion gave each builder a stock 2014 tC plus $15,000 to design and modify the car within 90 days. The Chrysler brand is giving its fans a platform to showcase their customized Chrysler brand vehicles through a new contest launching today on the brand’s Facebook page (www.facebook.com/Chrysler). Chrysler brand vehicle owners can compete for the chance to earn the title of “Chrysler Custom Challenge Champion” and a trip to the 2014 North American International Auto Show (NAIAS) in Detroit, a luxury vacation package for two and a two-year lease of a Chrysler vehicle. At SEMA, Toyota Avalon Tries Hanging With the Cool Kids

The full-size Avalon sedan, often damned with faint praise as Toyota’s Buick, is aiming for a different image, if not a different demographic, with a complete redesign for the 2013 model year. In an effort to give the Avalon a charisma transplant, Toyota is dressing it up in various new guises for this year’s Specialty Equipment Market Association Show.

At SEMA, which opens a four-day run here on Tuesday, the cross-dressing Avalon will appear as a supercharged performance machine, a super-fly urban cruiser and as a highly strung hybrid. The concepts are the brainchild of Toyota’s nascent Engagement Marketing department.
