• Workers who built the final Ford Ranger on Friday are disassembling the plant in which the compact pickup truck was produced for nearly 30 years. Ford had said in recent years that it would close the St. Paul, Minn., plant as sales of the long-running truck declined. There are no plans to sell, let alone build the Ranger replacement shown at various international auto shows in the last year, in North America. (KSTP.com)

Mitsubishi Motors Auctioning Final Production 2012 Eclipse with Proceeds Benefitting Japan Red Cross

Mitsubishi Motors North America, Inc., (MMNA) will be selling a one-of-a-kind 2012 Eclipse Coupe SE – the very last production Eclipse that rolled off of the assembly line at the company’s manufacturing plant in Normal, Illinois – to the highest bidder at the Mecum Auctions annual St. Charles Auction at the Pheasant Run Resort in St. Charles, Illinois, to be held September 15 – 18 of this year.

Audi S5 Sheds Two Cylinders in Midcycle Refresh

Goodbye, V-8 grunt; hello, V-6 whine.

As part of a midcycle refresh for its A5 coupe and convertible range, Audi announced Wednesday that the high-performance S5 model would lose its normally aspirated 354-horsepower V-8 in a trade for the brand’s 333-horsepower supercharged V-6, similar to the one used in the S4 sedan. The 6, Audi says, is about 20 percent more fuel-efficient than the outgoing 8.

The Think Again Edition

• For the fourth time in the company’s 20-year history, Think Global AS, a builder of electric microcars based in Norway, has suffered a financial collapse, declaring bankruptcy on Wednesday in its home market after failing to raise capital during a restructuring period. Think North America, a wholly owned subsidiary, builds the Think City runabout — a car recently reviewed in the Automobiles section — in Indiana, however it is dependent on its corporate parent for financial support. As such, the future of the North American operation also is in doubt. (Automotive News)
