Mercedes has launched the new SLS AMG GT3 “45th Anniversary”, a limited-edition customer sport racing car.
The car is being built by hand in a limited edition of no more than five vehicles in Affalterbach. Record DTM champion and AMG brand ambassador Bernd Schneider is involved hands-on in the production process, installing the AMG 6.3-litre V8 engine in the SLS AMG GT3 “45th Anniversary” together with an AMG engine fitter.

Binz is a German company whose sole skill is stretching Mercedes Benz cars for no obvious reason! They usually do this to Mercedes sedan models, but this time they went ahead and stretched an E-Class station wagon. Although in Binz’ mind they have probably made the ultimate family car, it seems to make a rather perfect hearse.

Though AMG, the in-house performance division at Mercedes-Benz, has been wringing triple-digit horsepower and torque gains from the German brand’s V-8 engines, its engineers have not wrenched on the automaker’s stout 6-liter V-12 in a few years.
Mercedes responded Tuesday with the 2013 SL65 AMG, equipped with a V-12 producing 621 horsepower and 738 pound-feet of torque. The roadster is expected in American showrooms in November and is scheduled to have its formal debut at the 2012 New York auto show, where press previews begin April 4.

As the auctions in and around Scottsdale, Ariz., over the weekend proved, the uppermost reaches of the collector-car hobby remain virtually unfazed by the various crises roiling the global economy.
A 1955 Mercedes-Benz 300SL Gullwing, one of 29 alloy-bodied Gullwings to have been produced by the German automaker, shattered preauction estimates on its way to a $4.2 million gavel price and a $4.62 final sale with buyer’s premium. As Rob Sass noted in his preview of the sale, a bidder would have found little fault with the example consigned by Gooding & Company:

What is it? The latest in a line of German roadsters inspired in part by an American automobile dealer named Max Hoffman some 60 years ago. The various iterations of the car have since served to showcase the Stuttgart automaker’s latest technology — in this case, an aluminum structure that recalls the alloy body of an earlier model, the 1952 300SL racecar.
