At MoMA, Volkswagen Formula XL1 Makes U.S. Debut

Martin Winterkorn, the Volkswagen Group chief executive, showed off the latest XL1 Formula prototype, as well as the actress Lucy Liu, on Monday night in Manhattan.

The XL1 was pulling double duty outside the Museum of Modern Art on 53rd Street. It was the first time that the latest prototype, unveiled at the Qatar auto show in January, was seen in North America. The vehicle also was the de facto ambassador for a broad partnership announced earlier on Monday between Volkswagen and MoMA, in which the German automaker would finance exhibition and education projects at the institution, as well as donate two works to its permanent collection.

The XL1, a diesel hybrid, is expected to be produced in limited quantities in 2013, with some units destined for the United States.
